How MapMyJobLevel Works

A short, adaptive, responsibility-based assessment that maps your role to the L1–L10 framework and explains the gap to the next level.

How does MapMyJobLevel determine Job Level?

A closer look at the responsibility behind your work.

By asking a few adaptive questions about the responsibility you regularly handle, then evaluating your answers across six dimensions — Knowledge, Complexity, Autonomy, Impact, Influence and Leadership / Scope — to find the L1–L10 level your role most closely aligns with.

Why Job Titles Are Unreliable

The same job title can describe very different responsibilities. A “Manager” in one company may coordinate routine work, while in another they own budgets, teams and strategic outcomes. Titles also inflate or deflate with company size, industry and region.

The L1–L10 Framework

Ten responsibility levels, from Trainee / Assistant to CXO / CEO / MD.

L5

Senior Professional / Team Lead / Supervisor

Handles complex work and may guide people, projects or workstreams.

Your level is based on responsibility — not just designation, salary or years of experience.

Six Dimensions of Responsibility

Knowledge

What level of professional or functional knowledge the role normally requires.

Complexity

How difficult, ambiguous or non-routine the problems are.

Autonomy

How independently decisions can be made.

Impact

How widely the consequences of decisions affect people, customers, functions or business outcomes.

Influence

How much coordination, persuasion or stakeholder influence is required.

Leadership / Scope

The breadth of people, projects, functions or outcomes for which the role is accountable.

Adaptive Assessment

The assessment usually takes around 5 questions. A 6th question appears only when your answers point to two neighbouring levels and more clarity is needed. There is no lengthy personality test and no CV upload.

Consistency Checks

Answers are compared across dimensions. When responses look inconsistent — for example, very high impact with very low autonomy — the assessment may ask a clarifying question rather than oversimplify.

Career Gap

Once your level is identified, your responsibility profile is compared with the next standard level to show where you already look strong and where more development, exposure or scope may help. Read more about Career Gap.

Specialist vs Management Path

Specialist Path

For professionals who want deeper expertise, complex problem ownership and wider professional influence.

Management Path

For professionals who want broader people, resource, decision and business accountability.

Dual / Flexible Path

For people whose strengths could support either direction.

Privacy

Your discovery starts privately. No CV is required and your identity is not automatically exposed to employers. See our Privacy Policy.

Limitations

  • Results depend on the information you provide.
  • Job Level is a structured interpretation of role responsibility, not a certification.
  • It does not replace your employer’s HR evaluation.
  • It does not guarantee promotion, employment or salary outcomes.
