Career Gap Analysis

Knowing your level is only the beginning. The next question is: what may be keeping you from the next level?

What is Career Gap Analysis?

Career Gap Analysis compares your current responsibility profile with the next standard level. It shows which dimensions already look strong and which may need more development, exposure or broader responsibility.

Four Kinds of Career Gap

Capability / Skill Gap

A knowledge or technical capability may genuinely need strengthening.

Experience Gap

You may need exposure to certain kinds of situations or decisions.

Role-Scope Gap

Your current role may not yet give you enough authority or accountability.

Influence Gap

The next level may require broader stakeholder or organizational influence.

Why a Training Course Is Not Always the Solution

Learning, exposure and responsibility all shape progression.

If your gap is a capability gap, learning can help. But if your role does not yet give you decision authority, ownership of outcomes or broader scope, another certificate may not change your level. Identifying the right gap helps you invest your effort where it matters.

How Next-Level Responsibility Differs

As careers progress, responsibility typically shifts from completing work, to owning outcomes, to shaping direction. For example, moving from L5 to L6 often involves greater accountability for a team, domain or significant specialist outcome — not only stronger technical skill.

Instead of “You failed to reach L6”, we say: “Your current role most closely aligns with L5. The next standard level typically involves broader accountability.”
